A Brief History Of Somali Paracy

2282 words - 10 pages

Piracy has been around since the beginning of time, and has played a drastic villain role since the days of ancient sea-fare. Common household known pirates like Blackbeard and Captain Hook from Peter Pan have garnered popularity throughout the years of history. Little do people know is that government has had an effect on piracy affairs. One main suspect in piracy during the late 1600’s was that of Sir Francis Drake. His affiliation with the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth, led to his approval of becoming a privateer to attack and plunder Spain’s ships and property. His attacks on these Spanish ships and ports lead to England being able to benefit from his plunder of riches that he captured. Government has taken its toll in today’s world as well. Since the start of the 21st century, Somalia has garnered negative reputation worldwide for news regarding their problems with piracy due to the economic collapse of their government. Since Somalia’s civil war in 1991, they have been viewed as an international example of a failed state, resulting in the community’s desire and role of modern day piracy in Somali waters (Piracy and terrorism). To make the matter and situation even worse for Somalia, a film that just was recently released, Captain Phillips, goes onto talk about and portray a true rendition of a pirate attack that happened off the coast of Somalia with Somali pirates in the early 2000s. Since the beginning of time, government has been a cause along with helping to sustain the growth of piracy.
Sir Francis Drake played a key role in plundering ships of Spanish decent for plunder so his Queen, Queen Elizabeth, could profit among his earnings, but in order to complete such expeditions like attacking Spanish ships for plunder and play, Sir Francis Drake had to learn special talents and task before embarking on his expeditions. He was given the opportunity by his mother to go learn and train with his older cousin, John Hawkins, and John’s dad, William Hawkins about anything and everything pertaining to ships, politics, and government issues (Kelsey 9). After his training, he began to go on more trips across the sea to where he finally, at the age of 22 was appointed captain of his first ship (Campbell 5). After becoming a Captain of his ship, The Judith, he sailed with his cousin, John Hawkins, and a small crew and fleet to Africa to employ in slave trade (Kelsey 10). Later in the year of 1568, Sir Francis Drake and his crew were trapped in the Mexican port of San Juan de Ulua. There many of his crew members were killed, which created an eternal hatred towards the Spanish for Sir Francis Drake (Kelsey 20).
Later, in 1572, Sir Francis Drake obtained a privateer’s commission from the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I, which in essence gave Sir Francis Drake the license to plunder any of Spain’s property of King Philip (Kelsey 30). Queen Elizabeth’s stand on Privateering and amassing riches by privateering quest and adventures were:...
