Adverbs: Definition, Types, How To Use It And Tips

786 words - 4 pages

Adverbs are tools that give additional details about where, what, when, why and how. It makes sentence more interested and easy to understand. I will explain three important parts of adverbs including definition, types, how to use them and little tips.
We will start with the definition of adverbs. Generally, adverbs are words that modify verb and adjective, give us more details about when, where, why, what and other more details of the sentence. Kolln (1994) has mention that adverbs frequently end in –ly, but there are not guarantee that all words that end up with –ly will always be adverbs. The words lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly, neighborly, for instance, are adjectives (p.3). In addition, Oxford dictionary (2013) explains that adverbs are expressing manner, place, time or degree. Adverbs are originating form late middle English, the original Latin word call Adverbium from ad- 'to' (expressing addition) + verbum 'word, verb' means word that expressing more detail.
Next, we will analyze types of adverbs. There are 5 authors that divided types of adverbs into different numbers, according to their knowledge. Quirk and Greenbaum (1993) explain that there are 5 kinds of adverbs including Adverbs of Manner (slowly, quietly), Adverbs of Place (on the island, there), Adverbs of Frequency (everyday, often), Adverbs of Time (before dark, early, now) and Adverbs of Purpose (to avoid hitting the rock, to get the best price). However, Adverbs of Purpose are not appearing in other author’s work. Townend (2003) show us that there are 5 types of adverbs too, including Adverbs of Manner, Adverbs of Place, Adverbs of Frequency, Adverbs of Time and Adverbs of Degree (almost, nearly, hardly, scarcely, barely quite). His explanation doesn’t talk about Adverbs of Purpose as same as Quirk and Greenbaum’s explanation, that have no Adverbs of Degree. The question is both of Adverbs of Purpose and Adverbs of Degree are doing the different job, so, why the authors cut them out instead of conclude all of them into 6 types? In addition, EnglishLeap (2013) and Brown (1851) explained that there are 8 types of adverbs including Adverbs of Manner, Adverbs of Place, Adverbs of Frequency, Adverbs of Time, Adverbs of Degree, Adverbs of Confirmation and Negation (certainly/absolutely, never), Adverbs of Comment (unfortunately,...
