Animal Testing and its ConsequencesAnimal research and testing actually began around 200 B.C. in Greece by Aristotle who was one of the first people to record experiments using animals (Cohen, 1984, p. 7). Since the days of Aristotle animals have been used through history for research and experimentation. According to a British journal, it is estimated that over 50 million animals are used for research each year (Hepple, 2002, p. 12). Most of this research is done at universities, medical schools and pharmaceutical companies for researching genetics, behaviors, testing of experimental drugs and biomedical investigation (Parliament Business, 2002, p. 3). Animal research and testing are very important because it is the best way to test or research something on a living subject. Additionally, the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences states that computers are unable to model interactions between molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms and the environment, making animal research necessary in many areas (Nowlan, 2009, p. 249). Animal research has been an important asset in scientific and medical research and many advances of the past century that continues to aid in our understanding and treatment of various diseases have been brought about due to animal research. The British Royal Society states that most of "all medical discoveries in the past 100 years have come because of animal research" (British Royal Society, 2004, p. 1). People all over the world are enjoying a better quality of life because of these advances and developments of new medicines and treatments, which could not have been made possible without the help of animals through testing. By reading this paper, the reader should be able to understand that there are many benefits for using animals in research and we need to continue to be able to use animals for testing. The goal of this paper is to show the consequences of doing animal testing for research and why it is beneficial. This will be accomplished by discussing the ethics of animal testing, the medical benefits and finally how scientists should be credited for their research and not be attacked for their use of animals in testing.First, the use of animals for research has long been controversial and even though there are numerous benefits to animal research, the ethical concerns surrounding the argument over animal research is always in debate. However, over the past 100 years the opinions of many of those that once rejected the idea of animal testing have slowly moved to be in support of the use of animals in research. The idea that is being seen in society and governments worldwide is that scientific and medical goals using animal testing is desirable as long as the research or knowledge gained is greater. For example, in England the government rules that animal testing must not outweigh any benefits from the gain of knowledge (PB, 2008, p. 9). Michael Fox, an activist against the...
