The orchestral piece, He’s a Pirate by Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt is the main theme from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. This song was performed David Garrett, who is a professional musician. David has also performed the second movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, which has some similarities to how he performs the piece to the Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Both songs have some differences and similarities about their performance quality even though they are both classical pieces come from a different time periods.
The visual aspect of the performance was executed well, since the soloist David Garrett is allowed to walk freely around to express the ...view middle of the document...

There was a lot of lighting that helped emphasize the accents of the music, especially during the staccatos of the piece. This was not present in the Pirate’s of the Caribbean performance. In both performances, David shows more body movement even if he is standing still, in the Beethoven performance. This helps show the flow of the music since he moves his body to show the dynamics and accents of the music in the performances. However, I feel that the visual performance of the second movement of Beethoven’s ninth symphony did not show the meaning or theme of the piece. In an article by Benjamin F. Carlson, he discusses that the main theme of the symphony was talking about brother hood due to the meaning of the lyrics of the final movement. From the performance there is nothing that suggests any theme of brother hood. The performance of He’s a Pirate had done a better job of conveying its theme, making it much more enjoyable than the Beethoven performance. Other than the visual aspects of the performances by David Garrett, there are the aspects of the technique the music was played, that affected the quality of the performance.
The interpretation of the performance of He’s a Pirate is different from the version found on the movie. Since the main melody of the piece was intended to be played with a large orchestral section rather than a soloist. The larger group for the main melody gave the piece a louder sound making the change in dynamic must more impressive for the original piece. There are some changes in the performance that helped the soloist play the song. So that is resembles the song found in the movie and gives the same feeling of excitement the original piece had. I feel that these changes, makes music sound better especially for a solo performance of the song. One part in the song has a lively call and response between David and other musicians in the orchestra, and this is not seen in the original piece. However, this makes the piece sound more playful, which represents the playful and comedic nature of Jack Sparrow. I find that David had played the piece very well and the notes were clean and well defined as the notes from the original music. In addition, many aspects of the music were kept from the original piece, like the change in...
