Childhood obesity has become a more and more important issue in today’s world. There are genetic factors that are coming into play with people changing their lifestyles and culture changes have been a great influence on children around the world. Children are generally not as healthy as they were many years ago. Obesity has been the main cause of all these changes.
There is a difference between being overweight and obese. Being overweight not necessarily means your obese. People who lift weights and are heavier than their required weight for their age group, sure they are overweight but healthy (Defining). People who are obese, have a great body fat percentage then they should have (Defining).
Schools have been an important player in battling childhood obesity, and it is important to gets these problems rectified and build awareness in teachers that work at these schools, to provide a knowing of the health risks and a knowing on how to prevent it further.
Physical activity among young children has declined in schools and has been one of the main causes of childhood obesity. One study showed that among third and fourth graders, they spend an average of 22-24 hours a week watching television (James). Also, more studies have shown that moderate to very physical activities have dropped off among young adults (James). Children are now less likely to commit to participating in gym classes and or any physical activity outside of school, but instead they are most likely spending their time watching TV (Smith, 85). Some children are not even allowed to play outside due to the neighborhood they live in, based on how safe it is outside for them to play (Smith, 87).
