The Internet is a worldwide collection of interconnected networks (Long, L. & Long, N. 2004, p.132). Through telephone wires and satellite links, Internet users can share information in a variety of forms. The Internet was started by the U.S. military's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in the mid-1960s. At that time, the Net was designed to be a communications network for government and university researchers across the nation. Today's Internet is a global resource connecting millions of users around the world. The size, scope, and design of the Internet allow users to e-mail, use instant message, buy and sell on-line, cruise the Net, and use search engines. According to Nielsen/ Net Ratings, there is a worldwide Internet population of 580 million users, as of 2002. The average user in the United States spends about 25 hours and 25 minutes at home and 74 hours and 26 minutes at work per month.Electronic mail, or "e-mail," is the most widely used feature on the Internet. It allows you to send messages almost instantly to other Internet users around the world. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), Internet users sent 5 billion e-mails per day and over 1.4 trillion e-mail messages per year in 1999. In 2002, Internet users sent 14.9 billion e-mails per day and 4 trillion e-mails per year. By 2005, these will more than triple to a staggering 35 billion e-mails sent daily. An estimated 94% of U.S. Internet users have e-mail. A survey from Price Water House Coopers found people spending 84% of their time on the Internet for e-mail. E-mail is currently one of the most widespread methods of communication in today's society. Unlike sending letters, e-mails can be received in a matter of seconds not days and they don't cost anything. With digital cameras, you can share all the pictures with your loved ones through e-mail. E-mails can also be used as one's personal mail carrier. You do not have to walk in the rain or summer's heat to go to the post office to drop off your letters. With a declining economy and gas prices on the rise, this is a good way to save money. By using e-mail, you can send messages to a group of people at one time without sending letters individually. E-mail is fast, free, and convenient. This is why millions of e-mails are being sent each minute.Instant Messaging Planet provides a concise definition of instant messaging: IM a type of communication service that enables one to create a private chat room with another individual. Typically, the instant-messaging system alerts the user to whenever somebody on their private list is online -- a capability known as "presence." They can then initiate a chat session with that particular individual. It is faster than e-mail and more convenient than picking up the phone. It was originally designed for casual online interactions between you and your "buddies." You can now send pictures, talk online or even do video conversation instead of keying in words. It has become so...
