There has been so much controversy and debating lately regarding whether we the American people should have the right to own and use firearms. In the United States Constitution the II amendment states that "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” (1). Many people would like to argue the point of this amendment, even though it clearly states that it is the right of the people of the United States of America to own and use their guns and that this right should not be broken or violated. United States citizens have the right to use their guns for protection as well as recreation. Our State Constitution also states that we have a right to bear arms. Texas State Constitution Article I - Bill of Rights Section 23. Right to keep and bear arms. “Every citizen shall have the right to keep and bear arms in the lawful defense of himself or the State; but the Legislature shall have power, by law, to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime.” (2). It is our right through the United States Constitution and the Texas State Constitution to keep and bear arms. There are still some citizens who believe if we made guns illegal that criminal activities, and shootings would seize to exist, but in all honesty criminals will be criminals whether it’s against the law or not to own or have possession of a fire arm. Therefore stricter gun control laws are not the answer.
Will having stricter gun control laws lower the crime rates? Many believe that if you enforce stricter gun laws the crime rate will drop. That is obviously not the case. Let’s look at the crime rate in Washington DC for example. Our nation’s capital has one of the strictest gun laws in the country, and one of the highest crime rates in the country. In 1976, the Washington, D.C. City Council passed a law prohibiting residents from possessing handguns and requiring that all firearms in private homes be kept unloaded and rendered temporally inoperable via disassembly or installation of a trigger lock. The law became operative on Sept. 24, 1976. (3). (4). During the years in which the D.C. handgun ban and trigger lock law was in effect, the Washington, D.C. murder rate averaged 73% higher than it was at the outset of the law, while the U.S. murder rate averaged 11% lower. (5). One year after the citizens there had their full firearm rights restored, the district had a full 25% decrease in homicide. (6). There have been numerous studies and surveys collected over the past few years that speak volumes on this ongoing gun control debate, so let’s let the numbers speak for themselves.
Consequently some believe that by just simply banning all assault rifles (AR-15 AK-47’s) will lower crime rates and mass shootings across the country. They believe...
