Historically our society drives men and women toward different socially acceptable behaviors and careers. Stereotypically men are the capable breadwinners that choose careers as: firemen, policemen, mailmen, garbagemen, milkmen, and the list continues. However, women are the warm caregivers that may choose one of three titles: teacher, nurse, or secretary. The above career pathways have been driven by societal norms, subsequently leaving women with marginal room for vertical mobility and limited leadership representation.

One article states, “A multitude of studies has shown...precisely the same information about job qualifications or job performance and merely varying the identity associated with the information as either male or female leads to differential and negative evaluations of the woman or her work. This is true when women apply for jobs or seek promotions once on the job” (APA, 1991). This research implies a double standard placed on women in the workforce, some discriminating factors include: appearance, physical ability, and wages. An example of such discrimination can be found in the Supreme Court case of Price Waterhouse versus Ann B. Hopkins.
Ann Hopkins was a senior manager at Price Waterhouse, one of the top accounting firms in the United States, after four years with the firm her credentials paved the way to being nominated for partner. Eighty-eight employees were nominated, Hopkins being the lone female in the group. Of the current 662 partners only 7 were female. After being placed on review the first year, Hopkins was nominated a second year in 1982 to which she was denied partnership (Paludi & Coates, 2011). Upon obtaining this information Hopkins resigned. In the coming weeks Hopkins began to evaluate why she might have been cut from partnership.
