In 1972 two men by the name of Theodore Friedmann and Richard Roblin had published an article in a book called science that was titled “Gene therapy for human genetic disease?” Which referred to Stanfield roger’s proposal in which “Good DNA” could be used to replace the defective DNA in people with genetic disorders.
Researchers are testing several approaches to gene therapy, including:
•Replacing a defective gene that causes disease with a healthy copy of the gene.
•removing a defective gene that is functioning improperly.
•Introducing a new and healthy cope of the gene into the body to help fight a disease.
WHY ARE SCIENETISTS CARRYING OUT THIS RESEARCH/DEVELOPING THIS TECHNOLOGY?
Scientists aim for Gene Therapy is to introduce reparative cells to the body in hopes of correcting the effect of the disease causing gene. And thereby treat the ultimate underlying cause of the medical problem.
WHO ARE THEY TRYING TO HELP/BENEFIT? WHY WILL THIS BE OF HELP/BENEFIT?
Scientists who are using or developing Gene Therapy are trying to help benefit the patient’s future. By giving someone that is born with a genetic disease or who develops cancer a chance at normal life. Gene Therapy can increase the lives of those born with a genetic disease or those who develop it through their lives. Gene Therapy can also remove mistaken DNA from the body and replace it with the correct DNA to help treat the patient.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS SCEITNISTS ARE CARRYING OUT IN ORDER TO RESEARCH/DEVELOP/USE THIS TECHNOLOGY?
Identify the defective gene that is causing the specific condition.
Pinpoint the location of the defective gene cells in the body’s tissues or organs.
Have the appropriate working version of the gene available.
Deliver the working version of the gene to the defective cell.
PROS OF GENE THERAPY:
Replacing the defective genes with healthy copies, Gene therapy provides the only known cure for genetic disorders.
If Gene therapy were to target the reproductive system, it is possible that children of the carrier of the genetic disease would be free of the defective gene.
Gene therapy has a big advantage over drug therapy; it can provide a cure rather than just easing the symptoms.
CONS OF GENE THERAPY:
The safety of gene therapy is still unknown as there is still a lack of knowledge and understanding of the treatment. The current understanding is based off of a theory rather than solid facts; however this could be improved by further research and practice.
In past trials, effects of the treatment have only been short lived.
Drug therapy, although not offering the possibility of a cure, is a tried and tested method and is therefore deemed safer
Drug therapy is a known and tried method. Although tis not offering the possibility of a cure it is thought of as being safer.
There is no guarantee that the healthy gene will end up in its intended place. With this said there is a risk that could cause even more damage to the genetic make-up,...
