Global Warming Is A Fact, Not A Theory

3392 words - 14 pages

When many people think about their future, usually they are only considering things that will effect or benefit their personal lives. Things such as the city that they will live or if they will have the same job five years down the road. Few people think about what may be going on in the environment around them. Global warming, also known as the greenhouse effect, is a rise in the entire temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. It has been receiving a lot of attention from scientists in the past few years. However, this is not a problem that has just been discovered. It has been evolving throughout history since 1928. But, it is a system that started around eighteen thousand years ago (When Did Global Warming Start?). Global warming is something that has been put off for many years, however many people will soon find that it is affecting the earth drastically every day.
The majority of people across the globe would most likely agree that they prefer warm weather over cold, which made global warming sound great at first. Until scientists started realizing that what was happening in the atmosphere would certainly do much more harm than good. And humans are to blame for a lot of it because every day activities are releasing harmful gases into the air. These are all known as greenhouse gases, and there are three main ones. These are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide (Causes of Climate Changes). All three of these gases are produced by natural activity such as volcano eruptions, and also human activity such as burning fossil fuels. However water vapor is the most significant greenhouse gas because it is what controls parts of the water cycle (Causes of Climate Changes). Everyday activities are releasing too much of these greenhouse gases into the air. Heat from the suns rays trap these gases, which makes the air muggy and hot (Weart).
Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is because almost all fossil fuels are made of mostly carbon (Singer). Fossil fuels are used for many things such as providing gas for vehicles and airplanes, heating homes, and powering electricity plants. Power plants are what humans use to convert coal into electricity (Khemani). Although scientists are working on ways to make the combustion of coal safer for the environment, they still have not perfected it. There are large tube-like structures attached to many power plants. They are also known as stacks. In many power plants across the world, these stacks are used to get the exhaust fumes out of the power plants (Black). The reason that this is harmful is because although a lot of the fumes coming out are just water vapor, other gases such as carbon dioxide are also mixed in. Carbon dioxide traps heat in the atmosphere, so these exhaust fumes are actually helping the process of global warming increase. Natural gas is a fossil fuel; however it does not create as much...

The theory is based on the idea that greenhouse gasses are accumulating in Earth's atmosphere as a result of human activities, causing surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures to rise. Debates have covered its causes and effects, and whether or not it actually exists and is a true threat to

Global Warming: Fact or Fable? Essay

1286 words - 5 pages . The effects to the human population, animals, and agriculture could be dangerous. There are people who believe this is happening and something needs to be done. As shown on the diagram below, the area with the largest temperature change is at the poles. Consequently, the rate of the melting of the polar ice caps has increased. According to statistics from NASA the

Theory of Knowledge- Is global warming true

1264 words - 5 pages THEORY OF KNOWLEDGEThe real life situation that I am about to enquire in my presentation is the diminishing ice-caps on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Many among the audience here might relate to it as an example of man-made global warming and so did I until I was introduced to another ideologically differing set of climate scientists who claim that the phenomenon is not due to the anthropogenic global warming but rather due to the sublimation of ice cap, a

A Rhetorical Analysis of Richard Lindzen’s The World Should Not Waste Resources on Fighting Global Warming

1231 words - 5 pages In his piece on climate change, Richard Lindzen addresses his stance on the heated debate of global warming. He claims that there is, in fact, no ongoing catastrophic temperature increase. Lindzen, a Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a recipient of the Jule Charney award from the American Meteorological Society (Richard Lindzen), believes that the earth goes through natural phases of warming and cooling

Global Warming: Not Our Fault

1188 words - 5 pages fact that the results of the independent study were not publicized by the media and the attempts to prevent naysayers from publishing works proving climate change is a natural event, shows that scientists backed by a special interest are more interested in being paid than furthering science. Apparently scientists’ trying to prove global warming is our fault forgot that progress supporting or disproving a claim is still progress. Global warming is

Evolution is a Fact and a Theory

577 words - 2 pages It has become quite popular among Creationists to claim that evolution is "just a theory" and therefore not a proven fact. This was echoed by Ronald Reagan in a campaign speech given in Dallas, "Well, it is a theory [referring to evolution]. It is a scientific theory only, and it has in recent years been challenged in the world of science--that is, not believed in the scientific community to be as infallible as it once was." This view arises

Humans Should Not be Blamed for Global Warming

886 words - 4 pages An increase in the Earth’s average surface air temperature is referred to as global warming. Global warming is part of a natural cycle and is not caused by an increase in Carbon Dioxide emissions from humans. Humans are therefore not responsible for global warming. Global warming is part of a natural cycle of climate change. The Pleistocene describes the time period that spanned from 1.8 million to approximately 10 000 years ago. During the

Also, a major concern relating to the greenhouse gases is higher sea levels. With a larger amount of these gases rising, Greenland is starting to melt. This causes extra water which leads to higher sea levels (National Geographic). Not only does global warming harm life on
