Americans are in an epidemic of sleep deprivation, and teens seem to be right in the middle of it. The many consequences that teens face from lack of sleep are disheartening. The constant difficulty of getting up in the morning, falling asleep in classes during the school day, and difficulty remembering things or concentrating are things that don't need to be present in a teens life (Our). One simple action can be taken; start school at a later time. High school students should have later start times because kids biologically perform better during later times of the day due to their internal clocks and it can improve their long term physical health.

By changing to a later start time, students will be able to attain their knowledge they are receiving and better chances of remembering everything also.
Early school start times do not just affect mental ability and mood,but also have an impact on physical health. Sleep deprivation increases the risk for diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Researchers think that a lack of sleep changes hormone levels and puts additional stress on the body. Early school start times may contribute to diabetes and obesity in several ways. When teens get up very early for school and do not go to bed until late at night, they may eat more than they would if they got an adequate amount of sleep.
