Great leaders are hard to come by. Everyday the following scenarios are challenged: ethics and moral values, adapting to each employee, providing insightful and positive interactions, focus and commitment toward goals that fit the mission and vision needs and, being an over all people person to make the work environment a friendly place. Being able to transition back and forth to accommodate employees while maintaining yourself on a daily basis is astonishing. Donal Parks, the Director of Center of Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) is the true definition of an authentic leader. For instance, one employee had to leave the country to attend to a family issue for three weeks: another cross-trained employee took over the project until she returned. His Ethics are excellent, he puts the employees immediate needs first. The Unitarianism/Altruism approach applies to CDER’s organization because the Director goes with the better numbers, at the same time he makes sure employees benefits from every thing we put our hands on. Typically, in team meetings, he is constantly reminding employees of available benefits, things to take advantage of as far as trainings and bringing up ideas for socials for the staff to get to know each other on another level.

CDER’s leader shows directive situational approach; this is significant to his leadership because Donal has a task-oriented approach through authority compliance. He shows servant leadership through conceptualizing, as Director he understands the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDER’s mission, purpose and vision in and out. Mr. Parks is very direct and focused in regards to the protocols of the Individual Development Plan (IDP), Performance Management Appraisal Program (PMAP), Position Description (PD), Organization chart and confidential trust, because the above mentioned is expected of CDER employees. Through inspirational motivation under transformational leadership, he tells CDER employees what’s expected and believes that CDER employees can achieve any obstacle.

CDER’s leadership provides individualized consideration through transformational leadership; employees move forward to the next level and become subject matters. By investing in CDER employees hired, leadership expects a lot from employees, and wants employees to excel and stay around for a long time. In accordance to IDPs and position competencies, leadership ensures that employees are utilized to maximum capability and to the standards that meet the FDAs mission statement.
