Every organization in existence today, from the United States government to the local Kiwanis Club, relies heavily on a group of leaders. Without a strong, cohesive leadership organization, failure would be in the future for even the most well organized and maintained institutions. Arguably, “The single biggest way to impact an organization is to focus on leadership development” (John Maxwell). But what precisely is leadership? It can be described using three fundamental features: selflessness, bravery, and the use of power.

In detail, in the event that a member of an organization is being harassed by another, a leader should be assertive enough to step in and take control of the situation. If a person does not have the confidence to resolve the problem at hand, he cannot hope to be an effective leader. Additionally, if he is unable to express ideas that could potentially benefit the group because he is self-doubting, his leadership role could be in jeopardy, especially if he is tasked with solving a specific dilemma. President Lincoln, an undoubtedly great leader, took the initiative to free the slaves when it was an unpopular decision among nearly half the country. If he had not taken the steps to emancipate the slaves, society as it is known today would not have developed.
Moreover, the use of power dictates a virtuous and effective leader. A leader has the power to sway others to follow in his steps, be it on a path to success or a path to failure.
