José Pablo Echeverría D.February 18, 2014Does Meg Whitman have the Leadership skills to generate the change that Hewlett-Packard is looking for in order to be the profitable Company that used to be?We can easily define Leadership as the ability to produce change, however nowadays, transform those simple words in reality has become highly difficult. "The challenges we now face are different. A globalized economy is creating both more hazards and more opportunities for everyone, forcing firms to make dramatic improvements not only to compete and prosper but also merely to survive. Globalization, in turn, is being driven by a board and powerful set of forces associated with technological change, international economic integration, domestic market maturation", strong competition, among others (Kotter, 2012). Meg Whitman after accepting the responsibility of being the CEO of Hewlett-Packard, may have this very clear.Meg Whitman is an American business executive. She is the president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard. A native of Long Island, New York, she is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School. Whitman served as an executive in The Walt Disney Company where she was vice president of strategic planning throughout the 1980s. In the 1990s, she served as an executive for DreamWorks, Procter & Gamble, and Hasbro. Whitman served as president and chief executive officer of eBay from 1998 to 2008. During her 10 years with the company, she oversaw its expansion from 30 employees and $4 million in annual revenue to more than 15,000 employees and $8 billion in annual revenue.When analyzing Meg's successful career and her amazing work during her period in eBay, nobody doubts she has the knowledge and the Management and Leadership skills to lead successfully a Company. However, the interrogation that rises is that Hewlett-Packard is much bigger than eBay, has a wider range of line products, but even worse, HP is facing one of the worse crisis in its history that according to analysts, is the result of years of lack of Leadership . Taking this into account, the question that we will like to address in this document is: Does Meg have the Leadership skills to generate the change that Hewlett-Packard is looking for in order to be the Profitable Company that used to be?With the objective of addressing this question, first of all we will describe Hewlett-Packard situation before Meg Whitman took the CEO role. After having placed the lector in context, it will be important to know what she has achieved since she has been on charged of the Company.
