Most leaders acquire various skills and knowledge allowing them to develop and apply themselves beyond their own natural abilities. While people cannot change who they are, they can increase their knowledge to help them be an effective leader. There are as many leadership philosophies as leaders. In this paper, I will discuss three leadership theories Servant Leadership, Situational leadership and Transforming Leadership, which together convey my leadership philosophy. Finally, I will illustrate how my Personal Leadership Philosophy is derived from these three theories.Servant LeadershipServant Leadership although a relatively new "named leadership theory" was actually the first leadership philosophy implemented by Jesus Christ. John Sachem discusses 17 different Bible verses' depicting the concept of servant leadership. Servant Leadership is described as first learning to be a servant, before taking on a leadership position. Servant leaders are motivated by love and humility. Jesus Christ, he states, is the best example of servant leadership and I wholeheartedly agree (Sachem, 2011). Servant Leadership is different from the traditional leadership theories in many ways. "Servant Leadership takes place when leaders assume the position of servant in their relationships with fellow workers." Self-interest does not motivate the servant leader. (Russell, 2002) The focus of servant leaders is on the development and growth of others through role modeling. Servant Leadership is the most significant of my personal leadership philosophy because it encompasses the most important characteristics of an effective leader. "Leadership is about how we treat and empower others. It is about being humble-minded, gentle and patient". (Into Thy Word Teaching People How to Study the Bible, 2011)Situational LeadershipHersey-Blanchard's situational leadership model suggests that successful leaders do adjust their styles. Four different styles are used with this theory based on follower readiness. Delegating style (S4), once the follower is mature-tasks can be confidently delegated. This style requires minimal direction from the leader. Nurses are left with the autonomy to carry out processes and make decisions. I incorporate this style mostly with the Coordinators and Lead Registered Nurses working in the ICU. I have delegated scheduling, day-to-day assignments, and decisions based on their maturity and readiness to effectively carry out the assigned tasks. When readiness is low the model calls for the telling style (S1) with its emphasis on task directed behaviors.
