Primary data refers to information that is original and collected directly by the investigator. However, secondary data refers to information being used by one investigator that was collected by another and is not original. An upside to secondary data is the collection process is comparatively cheaper, money wise, than collecting primary data, which can be expensive, as well as time consuming. Primary data is in the form of raw materials, while secondary data comes in the form of already collected materials. This can create a problem at times, since primary data is more up-to-date than secondary data, depending on when the original information was collected.
Ethics can become an issue when dealing with either primary or secondary data because personal bias comes into play. Also, when collecting data, the suitability of the information will always be positive when gathering primary data because the investigator knows what they are specifically looking for. On the other hand, secondary data may or may not suit the information in question, depending on how the investigator is using it.

Statistics are necessary in the field of psychology because they make it possible for “psychologists [to] use statistical methods to help them make sense of the numbers they collect when conducting research.” (Aron, Aron, & Coups, page 2).
