Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. In a soccer team named Cruz Azul there is a person who symbolized hope for the team. His name is Christian Gimenez. Because he was injured he now comes in as a substitute. As soon as people see him getting warmed up they start screaming his name. In soccer when you are called up for the national squad most of the players have a sense of feeling proud for themselves because they get to represent a whole country. Also, in boxing when you have a belt it symbolizes that you are a champion. Finally, the United States symbolizes freedom and more opportunities. Most people come to the United States because where they come from the didn’t have much freedom or they just weren’t advancing economically. A Worn Path by Eudora Welty is a story about an old African American woman named Phoenix Jackson who takes a journey along a path with manifold of dangerous objects. Phoenix Jackson takes the journey thru the path because her grandson drank liquid named lye and got sick from his throat. Phoenix Jackson makes her journey thru the path to go to the doctor’s office to get some medicine. As Phoenix Jackson walks thru the path she encounters a lot of animals like foxes, owls, beetles, jack-rabbits, coons, little bob-whites and big wild hogs. Phoenix Jackson also encounters a white hunter who points a gun at her face. Phoenix does not back down when the white hunter points the gun at her. Phoenix Jackson’s age is not mention but you can infer that she is very old by the way she naps along her journey, falls and can’t get up, by the way she asks a woman to tie her shoelaces, and how she forgets why she went to the doctor’s office after she arrives there. After she gets the medicine she heads back out into the worn path an may probably have to make the same trip again.
In ‘A Worn Path ‘By Eudora Welty symbolism is used tons of times. In an article named 123helpme the author states “the name Phoenix is the name of an ancient Egyptian Bird that regenerates itself after 500 years and lives on for another 500 years. This old woman represents the phoenix, which lives in her old age”. “She lifted her free hand, gave a little nod, turned around, and walked out of the doctor’s office. Then her slow step began on the stairs going down”(Welty 1281). Just like the Phoenix bird she has finished her trip and may have to go thru it again. Phoenix Jackson also symbolizes poverty. In an article named Word Press declares “the story also talks about poverty. The tear 1941 was not only marked by the start of the second world war nut also of poverty that was reality to many-particularly to black and to the people from the rural Southwest where Mississippi is.” She wore a dark striped dress reaching down to her shoe tops, and equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks, with a full pocket” (Welty1274).
