The Pros And Cons Of Technology

1939 words - 8 pages

Technology is rapidly changing each and every day, while this is changing it forces the users to have to change along with it. This rapid change raises the question of whether or not this new technology is safe for its users. This new technology raises many problems that include the monstrosity of cyber bullying and addiction to technology. Technology in part is not always bad, It does have its perks which include helping people to communicate over a distance. Technology also allows for advancements in healthcare and allows for people to reach more people. Technology can be the best thing men ever created or it could be the downfall to all humanity.
Technology is a vast body of knowledge in which it is used to create tools, develop skills, and to collect materials. Technology includes anything that can improve your life overall. The most used technology in today’s age and time is the internet. Mark Griffiths, Ph.D. in Psychology, states that the internet has become a space for individuals to freely communicate with others who share the same interests at little or no cost (217). In 1973, communication overall went to a greater level with the creation of the mobile phone. Cell Phones have made it possible to keep people in touch while there on the go. Over time cell phones have evolved at such a fast rate that they now are capable of using the internet which was once limited to your desktop computer. When I walk down the street I constantly see people walking with their phones up and their heads down looking at the device in their hands. Adolescents are very guilty of these actions. Sherry Turkle, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, states that the internet can be used as a “safe space for the personal experimentation that is so crucial for adolescent development” in order to define one’s identity in the world (883). Although many individuals over the age of 50 do not indulge in technology like the younger generation this fact is soon to change with the evolution of technology, I personally have found cell phones very useful and find myself never leaving the house without it. I have also found that cell phones are very useful in life and death situation because of the ability to communicate with the world around you. Cell phones also make me feel more connected to what little family I have and I also feel as if I have closer friends because cell phones allow you to open up more about your feelings without actually having to see the persons reaction to what you tell them.
Not only has the internet opened the lines of communication, but it has opened its users to a chance at fame. With today’s technology anyone can be famous especially wit the invention of YouTube anyone can change from a, nobody into a, somebody. Lakshmi Chaudhry, senior editor at in these Times states that we now live in the era of micro-celebrity, which offers end-less opportunities to celebrate that most special person in your life, i.e., you (19). Due to...
