Trends Essay

One of the best ways for MOE to address all three above-mentioned trends is to implement changes to its P.E syllabus. I have thought of incorporating four beneficial changes to the existing P.E syllabus to maximize students’ learning experience on weight management.

1. Empower students with the ability to plan and choose their activities.
In order to make the student an active participant in managing his weight, it is important to allow him to have a sense of autonomy in choosing how he wants to exercise. In this way, he would be motivated to participate actively and intensely as he is truly enjoying what he is doing. As such, instead of telling the students what to play during every P.E lesson, the school can offer 3-4 fixed activities/games/skills per term and allow the student to pursue what he desires. This implementation is beneficial as research has shown that autonomously motivated participation might result in a long-lasting physically active lifestyle (Deforche et al., 2011). As the student develops a greater sense of satisfaction from participating in the activity that he has chosen, it is believed that he would develop an independent sense of ownership of his body that happens to be the vision of MOE’s P.E syllabus (Deforche et al., 2011).

2. Increase the time spent doing physical activities in school.
The only solution available to compensate for the lack of physical activity outside school is to increase the duration of P.E sessions and recess time within school. We can have 2 hours of weekly P.E sessions instead of 1.5 hours as this provides greater opportunities for children to play and exercise with their friends.
One of the challenges of this implementation is the lack of time within school curriculum to extend the duration of P.E sessions. To combat this challenge, MOE can look into either extending the school hours by 15-20 minutes twice a week or reduce the time spent on morning assembly sessions. Allowing students to play and exercise in the morning, instead of having him to sit through assembly sessions might boost their energy levels for the day....
