In today’s world, there are many different sources of energy that can be used to generate electricity. When you think of the word energy, what comes to mind? For me, I think of having the ability to do wok, whether it is moving an object from one place to another, compressing a gas, producing heat, sound, or light, and having the ability to power something. One very important source of energy that has become very popular in todays world for a means of power generation is wind energy, wind power, or also known as a wind turbine.
What is Wind Energy?
Wind is air in motion, and is caused by the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface by the sun (“Wind”). Because of this, wind energy has less impact on the environment then other energy sources. Therefore, wind can produce electricity through a turbine or windmill. A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into electrical power. (“Wind Turbine”) In order for a wind turbine to work there are many properties that must be present such as: wind, wind speed, location with the right wind, as well as other characteristics that come to play such as short and long term fluctuations and the distribution of wind direction.
History of Wind Energy
Now that you know what wind energy is, it is time to look at where did the term wind energy originate from. To start, wind energy has been around as early as 200 BC, and was used to ground grain or pump water. One of the first uses of wind energy was by Heron of Alexandria. However, it wasn’t until the 7th century that the practical windmill was built. The very first windmills first appeared in Europe, but by the 14th century many countries were using windmills for all different reasons. In 1887, James Blyth built the first electrical generating windmill in order to light his holiday home. Shortly after, Charles F. Brush built the first automatic operated wind turbine for the production of electricity. By the 1930’s wind turbines were common for different uses all around the world. To this present day, wind turbines are still being used for the production of electricity. As well, there are many different styles of wind turbines that are used today for different purposes, but two very popular ones are the horizontal-axis and the vertical-axis. The styles of wind turbines have evolved over the centuries.
Types of Wind Turbines
As mentioned above there are different types of wind turbines used today. Each wind turbine varies in size; smaller wind turbines are used for home or business purposes and have a capacity of less than 100 watts. While larger wind turbines...
